Kilometre registration to be abolished for delivery vans
01-03-2011Secretary of State Frans Weekers told the Second Chamber in the Netherlands today, on 1 March 2011, that he would like to abolish kilometre registration for delivery vans. This proposal follows questions from the Chamber that highlight the wish to implement to purchase agreement for delivery vans used to drive less than 500 private kilometres each year. The exact details of the new purchase agreement are as yet unknown. The Secretary of State will further develop his plans in the coming months and include them in the car tax proposals to be submitted to the Second Chamber in early June. Delivery vans owned by self-employed persons will also be included in the plans.
As far as the cost of abolishing kilometre registration is concerned, Frans Weekers says, ‘In developing a scheme in which kilometre registration is no longer required, I cannot ignore the possible related budgetary effects. Such budgetary effects need to be compensated within the delivery van group, either generally or specifically, for example by changing the tariff structure for the road tax or changing the tax on cars and motorcycles’. Frans Weekers will discuss this with the business community in the coming months.
