Daytime lighting required by law
02-02-2011A European Commission (EC) communiqué states that, as of 7 February, all new cars and light delivery vans in Europe must be equipped with DRL (Daytime Running Light). This applies to models introduced on the market after this date.
Models already on the market must be equipped with the system by August 2012.
DRL turns on a vehicle’s lights when the engine is started. According to the EC, this increases the visibility of vehicles for other road users.
As early as 2008, the then Minister for Traffic Camiel Eurlings proposed that the use of daytime lighting should be quickly implemented in the Netherlands. At this point he was ahead of Europe, but his proposal was rejected and has now been taken over by the EC.
Tests carried out in various countries show positive effects on traffic safety. Lorries and buses are required to have DRL as of 18 August 2012.
